Atherstone sits in the north of Warwickshire, right on the Roman Watling Street, and it still retains the footprint of a traditional medieval market town. It was once a major hub for the hatting industry, and while those factories are long gone, the long, narrow "burgage plots" running off the main street give the town its unique, tightly-knit character. Geographically, it’s well-placed for getting around; the A5 and the West Coast Main Line connect you easily to Tamworth, Nuneaton, and further afield, yet you’re moments away from the Coventry Canal and the hilly, wooded landscape of the North Warwickshire countryside. Most of the daily life revolves around the central square and the long high street, which remains surprisingly independent for a town of its size. It’s a practical, unpretentious place where the sense of history is found in the brickwork and the layout of the streets rather than in a museum.
