Tucked into the low-lying coastal plain just south of Arundel, Ford is a quiet, functional spot defined by its proximity to the River Arun and its flat, open landscape. It’s a place where the infrastructure tells the story; you’ll find the remnants of the old canal and the busy railway junction where the West Coastway line crosses the river over an impressive retractable bridge. Life here tends to revolve around these transport links, with the station providing a direct, if modest, gateway to Brighton and London. Most of the local activity is concentrated near the historic 11th-century Church of St Andrew’s - a remarkably simple flint building that sits out among the fields - and the nearby airfield, which transitioned from a wartime RAF base to a site for local industry and the well-known Sunday market. It’s not a village with a traditional high street, but rather a collection of hamlets and newer pockets of housing that benefit from being five minutes from the South Downs and ten minutes from the coast. You get a real sense of the working Sussex countryside here, especially along the riverside paths that lead you straight into the heart of Arundel.
