Morton is a quiet, nucleated village in East Derbyshire, situated just a few miles north of Alfreton and roughly midway between Chesterfield and Mansfield. Historically rooted in coal mining and agriculture, it has transitioned into a residential community that retains a distinct sense of boundary, separated from nearby Tibshelf and Pilsley by stretches of open farmland. At its heart sits the Holy Cross Church, which dates back to the 13th century, and the village is geographically notable for being situated very close to the dead centre of England. For day-to-day practicalities, there is a local primary school and a traditional pub, while the nearby Pit Lane Park offers a large green space reclaimed from the area’s industrial past. Its location is particularly convenient for those commuting via the A38 or M1, providing a rural feel without being isolated from the broader services found in the surrounding market towns.
