Aldershot is a town defined by its long-standing connection to the British Army, a heritage that dates back to the establishment of the first permanent training camp here in 1854. Situated in the northeast corner of Hampshire, it sits within the Blackwater Valley, roughly 37 miles southwest of London. This proximity makes for a straightforward commute to the capital via the local station, with trains reaching Waterloo in under an hour. While the town centre is undergoing a period of transition and regeneration, its Victorian roots are still visible in the red-brick architecture and the sprawling military lands that border the urban areas. These vast tracts of MoD-owned heathland are a significant local asset, offering hundreds of acres of open space for walking and cycling that feel remarkably wild for a town of this size. Geographically, it’s well-placed for accessing the North Downs to the south, while the nearby towns of Farnham and Guildford are only a short drive or bus journey away. It’s a practical, unpretentious place that feels more like a collection of distinct neighbourhoods than a single sprawl, anchored by a strong sense of its own unique history.
