Aldeburgh sits on a narrow strip of land between the River Alde and the North Sea, a geography that shapes much of daily life here. The town is defined by its long, pebble beach where the local fishing fleet still operates directly off the shingle, selling the day’s catch from small wooden huts along the shore. Historically a Tudor port, the shifting coastline eventually left the 16th-century Moot Hall standing much closer to the water than originally intended. Culturally, the town remains tied to the legacy of composer Benjamin Britten, with the creative influence extending three miles inland to Snape Maltings. It is a place of wide-open skies and salt marshes, where the weather is a constant presence and the walking routes toward Thorpeness or along the river wall provide a stark, quiet beauty regardless of the season.
