Six Bells sits in a steep-sided section of the Ebbw Fach valley, just south of Abertillery in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent. Historically, the village grew around the Vivian and Griffin shafts of the Six Bells Colliery, and while the pits closed in the 1980s, the landscape today is defined by the Parc Bryn Bach and the wooded hillsides that have reclaimed the former industrial sites. Geographically, it is a linear settlement where the rows of traditional stone terraces follow the contours of the valley floor. The most prominent landmark is *Guardian*, a 20-metre tall Corten steel sculpture designed by Sebastien Boyesen to commemorate the 1960 mining disaster; it stands on the old colliery site and is visible from most parts of the village. For day-to-day practicalities, the A467 provides the main road link down the valley towards Newport, and the nearby Ebbw Vale railway line offers a direct connection to Cardiff. It is a quiet, close-knit community where the rugged terrain of the South Wales Valleys starts to transition into more open upland common land.
