Tucked into a narrow branch of the Cynon Valley, Cwmaman is a village that follows the steep path of the Aman river until it hits the dead-end of the valley. It feels more secluded than neighbouring Aberdare, as there is no through-traffic; the road simply stops where the hills rise up to meet the forestry. Historically, it was a busy coal town centered around Fforchaman Colliery, and while the heavy industry is long gone, the legacy remains in the rows of stone terraces that climb the hillsides. Today, the village is largely defined by its access to the outdoors, with the shepherd’s paths and biking trails of the surrounding mountains starting almost at the end of the garden gates. It’s a place where the community still revolves around the local club and the primary school, retaining a distinct, quiet identity shaped by the physical geography of the valley walls.
