Aberaeron is a planned Regency town on the Ceredigion coast, situated where the River Aeron meets Cardigan Bay between Aberystwyth and Cardigan. Unlike many coastal villages that grew organically, much of the town was intentionally designed in the early 19th century by the Reverend Alban Thomas-Jones Gwynne, which explains the unusually wide streets and the grid-like layout around the harbour. These streets are lined with distinctive, brightly painted Georgian houses that give the town a sense of order and space. High tide brings the water right up to the harbour walls, which remain the focal point of daily life, whether for the local fishing boats or those walking the coastal path. Practically, the town functions as a busy service centre for the surrounding rural area; it’s home to the county council offices, a primary and secondary school, and a reliable mix of independent shops and trades that stay open year-round, rather than just for the summer season. While it feels open to the sea, it is well-sheltered by the surrounding hills, and the pebble beaches on either side of the harbour offer a direct connection to the Ceredigion Coast Path.
