Set at the point where the River Usk meets the Severn Estuary, Newport is a city defined by its industrial past and its role as a gateway between South Wales and the West Country. It gained prominence in the 19th century as a major coal-exporting port, a heritage still visible in the skyline dominated by the Transporter Bridge - one of only a handful remaining in use worldwide. The city is geographically compact, situated roughly halfway between Cardiff and Bristol, with the M4 motorway running along its northern edge making it a pragmatic hub for those working across the wider region. While the city centre features the expected mix of modern retail developments and Victorian civic architecture, the outskirts offer a quick transition into the rural landscapes of the Gwent Levels and the nearby Wye Valley. It’s a place where the landscape is relatively flat toward the coast but climbs into steep ridges to the north, providing a variety of outlooks and environments within a small radius.
